Report Builder - Understanding Measures

What Are Measures in the Report Builder?

Measures are optional numeric values that count records in a report. Add a Measure when you want to answer a question such as “How many participants came from each recruitment source?” You can use a Measure by itself to see a total, or combine it with Dimensions to break the count into categories.

You can also create a report using Dimensions without selecting a Measure. Select at least one Measure when you want the report to display counts.

Available Measures

Measure What it counts
Participant Count Participants. This is a global measure; adding study-specific Dimensions or Filters can change which participants are included in the results.
Participant Event Count Participant events in studies you have access to.
Global Contact Log Count Contact logs marked as global.
Study Contact Log Count Non-global contact logs in studies you have access to.a

Study-specific counts are limited by your study access. For example, a report containing only Study Contact Log Count sho`ws the total number of non-global contact logs across the studies you can access. It does not include logs from studies you cannot access.

Using Measures with Dimensions and Filters

A Measure supplies the count. A Dimension groups that count, and a Filter limits which records are included.

Reporting question Measure Dimension or Filter
How many participants came from each recruitment source? Participant Count Group by Recruitment Source
How many participant events are associated with each event name? Participant Event Count Group by Event Name
How many study contact logs have a particular outcome? Study Contact Log Count Filter by Contact Log Outcome

Steps to Add Measures

To add a Measure, open the Measures dropdown in Report Builder and select the count you need. Add Dimensions or Filters as appropriate, then select Run Report to view the results. If you change the report configuration, run it again to refresh the table.

Tip: Check whether the data you want to count is global or study-specific before choosing a Measure. Your Dimensions, Filters, and study access can affect the final count.
